Liepāja Symphony Orchestra Musicians to Perform at Meet in Beijing Festival in China
Leading musicians from the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra (LSO) have been invited to the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival, set for May 6-12.
Since the year 2000, Meet in Beijing has attracted such luminaries as Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The festival, encompassing music, theater, dance and the visual arts, has become one of the most prestigious and certainly one of the largest in Asia.
At two concerts and a presentational event May 10-11, the LSO musicians will appear with the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra, featuring Latvian, Western European, and traditional Chinese selections. One of the highlights is sure to the special arrangement by Dzintars Jurgelaitis of Emils Dārziņš’s lilting Melanholiskais valsis (Melancholy Waltz). It must be mentioned here that this chamber orchestra played concerts in Rīga and Liepaja last fall.
LSO is appearing in Beijing courtesy of chief sponsor Grindeks, the Latvian Ministry of Culture, Liepaja City Council, and the Embassy of China.
